Alberta Mind Biotech (AMB) in collaboration with The Immigrant Education Society (TIES) will be organizing and co-hosting this year's mindfulness conference that is funded by the government of Alberta. This free event will be occurring on June 24th, and with people mainly interacting through online means because of the COVID-19 pandemic, our conference this year will be through Zoom. The central theme this year is “Building Our Strengths Through Mindfulness”.
The year 2020 and 2021 have been life-changing with our lives drastically altered because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This has created its own set issues such as financial tolls, online transitions of work, family/child-rearing practices and various other facets of life. While this has been a long and difficult road for many, it still remains to be seen if these changes are permanent. While these times have provided their own set of problems, it has also proved to create many opportunities for growth and self-reflection. Due to increased quarantine periods, many of us have struggled to reconnect with our fellow peers and with the rest world. With increased apprehension, changes in the global economy and clashing viewpoints, it is imperative that we are reminded of how connected we really are.
Mindfulness has proved to be useful in times of adversity, showing that mindfulness can reduce stress, increase wellbeing, assist in treatments of addiction, anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain etc. It is a sound method to help both mental and physiological problems with long term practice. Mindfulness can be transitioned and administered through online means and telehealth, proving useful and efficient despite the ongoing pandemic. People can use mindfulness as a tool depending on their level of stress and fear. Mindfulness is not the be all end all solution to many mental and physical illnesses but it can be extremely helpful for advanced and beginner practitioners alike.
